Give me a break. If these seals were covered in scales and had eyes like an alligator no one would care. This is a traditional hunt that by it's very nature has kept hard working Newfoundlanders employed and their families fed for 100's of years.

The overabundance of seal's is now having an affect on other fisheries that these seals hunt. Funny how the decline in Cod stocks and the rise in seal #'s seem to be at each end of the scales. Then when the cod stocks fell the seals moved on to other species that are now dwindling in #.

Seals are a resource, just like fish, shell fish, plants & trees. The only difference is they have big wet doe eyes and suck you all in by the heart strings. Have you ever looked at a fully grown adult seal? No prettier than a full grown cow, I don't see you all lining up along the highways protesting there.

Go into the various bays and ports of Newfoundland, and look into the eyes of the children whose parents can't buy them food or clothing, or have to decide if we fix the truck or pay the rent. I don't see you leading that charge!!

If you want to locate the problem to declining fish stocks and poverty in Newfoundland, then look in a mirror.

I just wanted to point out, that unless you have other images you're not showing us of actual dead baby seals, you might want to take those words out of your argument, unless your intent is to actually spread FUD. In all of the photos you have shown, not one is a "baby" as you call it. Now I can't tell if any are nursing mothers, which is also against the rules, but based on the way this article is put together, some serious FUD going on.

Bridget-you have no understanding about Coyotes and how they destroy the ecosystem. Northern wolves are selective eaters, Coyotes eat everything hence in my area, the large hunting birds, owls, hawks etc. are starving. You have no understanding about the seal hunt, the necessities of the fishermen and their families, the overpopulation of seals and destruction of fish stalks. In NS we now have an agressive Coyote that is crossed with wolves and large domestic dogs. The result is a creature that stalks humans, is killing sheep, calves, fawns, frogs, earthworms, EVERYTHING. Yet they have thousands of acres of woodland right here behind us. Please either do your homework or go south and help the birds in Louisiana. While you are at it dye your hair blonde. You sound blonde Bridget and your lack of knowledge is disgraceful.

I too find this so deeply disturbing. It's contrary to what our country markets itself to be -you know, mother-nature-loving, relatively peaceful, beautiful national parks, friendly, modest.... To paraphrase Mahatma Gandhi, you can tell the progress of a country by the way it treats it's animals. In this view, these disgusting acts and the permissiveness of our government makes us rednecks. A big problem in this country (and many others, as well) is that the laws regarding animals in general are hopeless. We forget that we are the ones who encroach on their space, we pillage the fish out of the waters, we literally grow animals for slaughter (either for food or for fur coats for the *itches who have more money than brains or heart). Humans have a sense of entitlement. But god/buddha/allah forbid that a bear attacks some dumb-ass who deliberately hikes in woods known to have bears that may have cubs with them and it's the bears who are blamed. A bear doesn't walk into the city and attack someone waiting for the bus. I'm just sayin'. The truly sad thing, is that the seal hunt is just one of the many travesties that humans are committing and we think that, because we use verbs and go to ATMS, we have a right to do so.

I'm so glad that the EU has banned seal products. If I could, I would make those hunters eat all the rotting flesh from the seals they clubbed to death... raw.

Maybe someone could start selling anti-seal hunt Christmas cards that we could send to the Prime Minster and all his MPs. And not pictures of cute, cuddly, living seals. The seals as they're being brutally killed, the carcasses of the poor animals who's life and skin has been ripped off them... It's the perfect time (December) for the government to start thinking about what they're NOT doing about the events that will take place in the spring.
